Hello, My name is Hiroki and I'm joining here from Japan. I’m 56 years old.

I got my private single-engine land license in Canada in 2009. after that I convert to Japanese license and flew a Cessna 172P for nearly 15 years after that.

Recently, my best friend bought a 1994 Bonanza A36 JA4220, so I started flying it. It's quite fast compared to a Cessna, so it's quite difficult, but I'd like to practice so I can get the hang of it. I'm looking forward to learning as much as I can. Thank you in advance.

Welcome!

I'm sure many of us here would be fascinated to learn about your flying. What is a typical VFR flight? Are flight plans required for VFR? Are there many places you can go? Is it difficult to find fuel? Is private IFR flying allowed?

We recently spent 2 weeks in Hokkaido and it was strange for me, to not see or hear a single piston-powered airplane that whole time.

Welcome, we used to live in Japan and I know flying is much more difficult there. If you have not done so, you may want to join ABS (American Bonanza Society). They are an excellent resource. Also the BPPP online training is very valuable.

Welcome to Beechtalk.

If you can find a copy of "Flying the Beech Bonanza" by John Eckalbar, it's worth a read, though primarily aimed at the model 35/33.

Thank you Jeff,

I'm here to answer any questions.
General aviation in Japan is extremely rare. almost all pople are very surprised just having a pilot license.

I live in Oita Prefecture in Kyushu, on the western side of Japan, so it's relatively easy to use light aircraft compared to the Tokyo area.

I go to the airport in neighboring prefectures or Shikoku for lunch about once or twice a month.

A VFR flight plan is not normally required within 5NM, but is required by the Civil Aviation Authority.

There are limited airports where AVGAS can refuel. I'm not in trouble, but a flying club Nagasaki, they needs to cross the ocean to Saga for refueling.

I am not qualified, privately operated IFR flights are possible.

Hokkaido is particularly large in Japan, so it may be difficult to see airplanes.

Thank you for your many questions.

Thank you David,

As you know, the flight environment in the United States and Japan is very different. The environment in America is enviable.

I'm interested in ABS, so I just registered it. I plan to join properly and study using online materials. Thank you :)

Welcome Hiroki. It's good to see that BT is becoming more international!

A long time ago I rented a 172 in Nagoya and flew around (with a local CFI) for a couple hours, just to say I could. I recall the cost being 3-4x what a rental 172 was going for in the US back then but I expected it to be relatively expensive. I neglected to tell the instructor that one of the things I was looking at was an aerial view of some of the cities my dad had bombed from his B29 during WWII though.

Thank you Lance,

I have only been to Nagoya Airport once. It's very urban.
Yes, aircraft rental is very expensive, and it is difficult to fly unless you are introduced by a friend who is a member of a flying club.

It's a blessing to be able to fly in a peaceful sky. :)

Thank you Guy,

It's a wonderful event that would be unimaginable in Japan.
If I have a chance, I would definitely like to go there and bring some Japanese beer with me. :D

Welcome Hiroki.

A friend of mine served on the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan stationed in Yokosuka. He liked it there. Said it was a beautiful place.

Welcome!

I love Japan and particularly its people. I’ve been traveling to Japan for 20 years (often times up to 10X per year). It’s a fascinating place and I wish everyone could witness the outstanding level of customer service. We have much to learn in the US.

When I transitioned to a Bonanza from a Cherokee the two biggest things we're engine management and slowing down for arrival.

I spent some time in Misawa. Interesting place. I'll always remember Green Pole street. The main street with green poles every 20 feet. Strange (to my ears) sounding music playing through speakers all along the street.

They will serve you a great big bottle of beer with a shot glass. Lol

I probably shouldn't mention it, but there used to be a place in Hachinoe where girls would strip on the stage and bring somebody up from the audience and have sex with them on the stage.
