The T-28 suffers from the "Never fly a single engine Wright powered airplane" rule. My partner in the SNJ has one and he enjoys wiping the oil off of it. Good thing, because there is always a lot of oil on it. And it is a very big airplane when you're walking around it or climbing on it or wiping it down.

All that said, he says it is a sweet flying airplane and he's having a blast fixing it up, adding avionics etc. I think they can be had for reasonable prices (as warbirds go).

I had heard the old saying, what do you do if you see a Wright that is not leaking oil? Check the oil, it is empty.

I asked my Dad (USN, flew the SNJ, AD, TMB, AF, and S-2) and he laughed out loud, and said EXACTLY.

Checked, the site, they also offer a BMW V12 power plant.

Hmm, BMW owns Rolls Royce. A BMW engine could be considered a Rolls Royce engine also. :D

I see some turbo prop versions were made with a Lycoming 2450 HP turbine engine; a few prototypes YAT -28E and about 50 for Taiwan AIDC T-CH-1, 1450 HP Lycoming turbine. The appealing look of the big Wright radial is lost on the turbine powered ones though

This caught my eye

Apparently there is a place in FL working on a GM LS engine as well as a BMW V10

If you love the way a Mustang looks but just can't afford one, these might be a good option.

If you want something that flies the way you think a Mustang flies, buy an RV8.

I always thought a T-28 was a cool airplane. Are they in demand like some of the other war birds? Are they good for acro? It seems that they wouldn't have the ground handling issues of the tail wheel T-6. Any BT'ers have one?

Wikipedia says at least 49 have been built, and production continues

That thing looks like a T-34C that got stung by a bee.

Have you seen one fly a routine? It's insane. The airshow routine looks like an RC plane, just bigger and louder.

Maybe someday they'll hang a big enough engine on one and someone will make it hover in place.
