However, if it were me, I would get the STC openable window slot (like the Bonanza pilot window). When you unscrew the the window lever and let the window float up at the wing it gets really windy inside, cold if cooler weather, and the airplane tends to yaw a bit.
Don't waste your time with the Horton STOL, it is a very minor STOL, you really want the Sportsman STOL. SImilar pricing, but better performance. THe VGs give the airplane much better slow speed handling characteristics. Your earlier model doesn't have the longer chord wing that came with the P model and later.
I almost always used 40 degrees of flaps when landing mine and never ran out of elevator, so I find that odd that you do. I regularly took mine into an 800ft one way in, one way out strip to go fishing with my son. That was about the shortest i would use.
I think I would have gone with a 180 or 185 over a 182 for what you want to do. The issue with the 180/185 is that my wife can't get into them. Bad knees. I don't run out of elevator. I run out of trim. No problem flaring or landing. I agree about the STOL kits. Sportsman all the way. VGs and STOL kit will result in painting. I'll hold off, for now.

Mike: FWIW: I installed the Horton kit on my Ponked 180, as an abundance of precaution for my 900 ft. airstrip at my ranch. (5,500 MSL, mountains, in a canyon). Thought it was great, but flew my cousins perfectly stock 180 in once, and noted virtually no difference. Unless you are competing for some plastic STOL trophy, save the cash. That gadgetry will only get you deeper in the hole before its too late, especially in gusty wind conditions. YMMV.

Tom Navar, Oh my can't believe you said that, this conversation was about spending AMU's(Tom G's) not logic. Wow how many rules did you break on BT with the "don't waste the money on that" Seriously I don't have much experience with the S kits. Better to talk to the float guys and find out how it impacts there life. Mucho important for them to be as slow as possible and under control. TO's to, slower she becomes airborne the better. Fine line there. I'm not investing in the kits but I"m not planning to test the limits of my 185's ability. This is a great thread back to spending Tom's retirement $...

Tom,
Congrats on the PP'd 182. I love mine, the only way to go on a 182.

Reading through the forums with lots of 180/185 owners, there are a lot of guys pondering the same issues. Is there 'enough' of a difference? Do you need VG's with it? Are VG's good enough?
I need to do a deeper dive. I certainly wouldn't do it to get 3 more knots of stall speed reduction.... but 10? That would be nice. Somewhere in the middle is the cost/benefit break point but the forums are all over the board on real world numbers for the mod.
more research..... Mike If you are serious, go Katmai or go home...the ability of those things to fly and handle at slow speeds is amazing. If I had a post 74 with enough UL to tolerate the extra weight up front I would do it... RAS
