If the OP's goal is to fly the 501 single-pilot, is 25 hours mentor time enough?

Depends on each individual and their flying experience. Their ability to fly to ATP standards is evaluated on the checkride.

I needed 25 of mentor as well. Insurance did like my 421 experience as that’s more difficult to fly than a 501 and similar systems.

501 is an amazing aircraft and once you go to a jet there is no going back. The safety and ride quality is so much better.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. This is what I expected. I do think it will be a reasonable transition given my 421 time.

After reconsidering and for various reasons we decided to go with another MU2 for now. Will be test flying it on Friday...

Perhaps in 2-3 years we might sell the F model, upgrade, or just keep both Mootoos.

Does FlightSafety still offer 501sp training? Does anybody have an idea for the cost and length of the initial course?

If I were king I would mandate that all single pilots actually go to a real altitude chamber at least once.

I enjoyed my chamber ride at Beale. Plus we got to spend some time in a Baransky chair. I would endorse the experience for anyone.

At the very least, it should be part of the high altitude endorsement. It could also follow the oxygen requirements (if you are flying where you are required to use oxygen, you should have been in an altitude chamber (or the simulated prote room).

It’s one of those experiences that until you’ve had it, you just don’t know what YOUR symptoms are.

I did a chamber ride at the FAA Cami in Oklahoma City. I thought it was pretty tame.

My problem has been trying to find a chamber. Mesa gateways has weird hours. OKC has not been responsive. Alamogordo (around the corner) closed before I became a pilot.

Anyone have up to date list?

KBR environmental lab at Brook in San Antonio does chamber rides for NASA and other aerospace entities, but not sure if they are open public training. Their contact info is below. Give them a shot.

Contact us to learn more at 210-998-4075 or email AEPL Program Manager at daren.chauvin@us.kbr.com.
