For you flightaware warriors, take a look at the Gulfstream test flight tracks that are out over the Atlantic east of Savannah. There is likely some flights that exceed Mach .99

Those are test flights, not normal operation.

I don’t see them doing it ever again in my lifetime.

Seeing the Concorde on the ground at Dulles is impressive. It is hard to imagine the amount of fuel that guzzled in order to go fast.

New designs will not guzzle as much as the Concorde, though they will use more fuel than subsonic aircraft. Interesting how capital flows into these concepts. Aerion was going full speed ahead till it went bust. Boom has some orders, but not a large qty. It is a niche market.

Can’t wait to see if Hermeus pulls off the Hypersonic commercial/corporate plane.

The CitationX was the fastest civilian aircraft after the retirement of Concorde...but it's gone now. Why? Because Textron discovered that high-net-worth folks and corporations value a bigger, wider, taller cabin (Bombardier Challengers, for example) over arriving 10 to 15 minutes soon. So, I wouldn't bet on a supersonic business jet anytime soon, especially with increasing environmental pressures.

That can't be true because the latest Globals and Gulfstreams can all do a Mach 0.925+ cruise and one of the selling points of the Global 8000 is a Mach 0.94 cruise!

It's a selling point, not a buying point.

When there's a 3% difference in speed (less than 10 minutes on a 5 hour flight), the cabin is the buying point.

Agreed, but in this case they can have both and don't have to make compromises (compared to a Citation X). That said, if you are building a SST you would hopefully design it to comfortably do Mach 1.5+... At those speeds, there would be way more than a 3% speed difference and gaining an extra hour or more may have a business case since you can never get back time.

I rode the concord once. It's been awhile but if I recall, there was a hour plus ground hold in New York before departure, another hour's delay on a taxiway, then ~45 minute wait in Paris because the gate wasn't ready. Door-door it was no faster than a modern day airliner on a rare day that everything works.

If we want to go faster, we don't need a more expensive fuel-gulping airplane. We need better infrastructure and planning.

So why else did Textron cancel the CitationX? I can assure it is true...

And one other thing...Mach numbers that start with "0.9" are only achieved after long regular-speed climbs, to very high altitudes, 40,000 & 50,000 ft, guzzling tons of gas, with slower descents at the other end...so you don't get Mach 0.9-something all the way from A to B...only at the high altitude cruise...hence the very small time savings over most trips.

Jim is correct.

Lastly, a G600, 700 or 800 series or a Global 8000 or similar are in MUCH bigger category by every measure...not least of which, acquisition price$$$. At least double.

Concorde, uppercase "C" and with an "e". There was huge debate and competition between the British and the French during development and the British wanted their spelling, "Concord", but the French wanted their way..."Concorde". The British decided there were bigger fish to fry and graciously conceded to the French. Hence "Concorde".

I flew it once also. LHR to IAD. Just over two hours and being pre-9/11, TWO visits to the cockpit. It was in every sense a "once in a lifetime"...
