Looks like the separation did not occur, but the booster tried to reorient anyway to follow its planned trajectory. Obviously, it won't work with a few extra million pounds attached to it. The lack of separation may be due to the lack of achieving sufficient speed and altitude, or just a mistake of some kind. "Chamber pressures nominal" means nothing now when I hear that callout given engines were gone at liftoff. Mike C.

It hit the concrete and blew it up 325' in the air.
The concrete hit the bottom area around the engines and took out the hydraulics. The hydraulics that is used to pull the locking pins at the top so that the rocket can deploy from the booster. Woof! Where did that picture come from? That'll leave a mark on Mars

Username Protected wrote: On Falcon 9, not on Starship. It would be insane to thrust in one direction and then change direction for the second stage. The flip is supposed to be the first stage only, AFTER separation: Attachment: starship-profile-1.png I suspect the observed behavior is the first stage trying to flip and do boost back with the second stage still attached for some reason. It's really interesting to see the contrast in culture between the old school NASA launches and the SpaceX team. NASA MCC was huge on creative thinking outside the box, and yet they still had a "uniform" of sorts with roughly the same color and style shirts and ties. It looks like you'd be hard-pressed to find two people wearing the same thing in SpaceX launch control. I don't know if that matters, but I think they are deliberately pushing a culture of independent thought. Two approaches to the same goal. Also interesting on the habit of applause after a RUD (rapid unplanned disassembly) so the team is celebrating the knowledge gained even if the thing blew up. Obviously that changes once they have people at the pointy end.
Regardless, it was a heck of a show and I can't wait for the next one.

Better tell me or I'll find out for myself! I still use compressed air to spin up bearings when nobody is looking

That might have been all in the fog of war. they lost hydraulics most likely, couldn't gimbal, couldn't unlatch stages, etc They may be rethinking their redundancy in their hydraulic designs after this, if there's a commonality IIRC; this is the only booster w/hydraulics. The next booster uses electric …
