Why launch when you can't really see how well it is doing on reentry and landing? That seems odd to me since the reentry and landing of the Starship part is the actual tricky bit, IMO.

So why would they do this in the dark?

I would have liked to see it in daylight on both ends too. I’m not sure why it’s not.

I've wondered the same thing, last year we were in Ft. Lauderdale and drove up to see a launch that was late in the evening. We'll be at the Axiom Space AX-2 launch at Cape Canaveral, it was scheduled for 10:43AM on 5/8 but just got pushed today.

While I don't agree with everything the writer says, an interesting read from one of the detractors

https://blog.esghound.com/p/spacexs-tex ... email=true

He brings up some interesting points, especially about the lack of flame trench/water deluge system.

And if anyone wants some good reading, the FAA has published their full report

Looking good from the ground.

Edit: Sorry about the picture orientation. No idea how to adjust that, it's fine on my device.

Good pre-launch interview with Elon.

Successful test is not expected. This is an iterative data gathering test to be improved upon on future flights. Achieving orbit is a long shot. Reference made to the N1 wrt RUD potential.

^^ he always says that. :)

I’m about:
20% chance it happens tomorrow
80% chance it mostly does as hoped.

I have arrived at SPI. The traffic at 0430 local is a zoo.

A buddy that vacations here frequently suggested:

- Use the very first parking lot for free public beach parking (it is mostly empty)
- Bike the remaining 8/10ths mile to the southern tip

He is mistaken re: the lack of a water deluge system. It was installed and tested several months ago.

I wonder what else he got wrong?

Flight tracking shows few airplanes in the area.

One of them is the NASA WB57 at FL450, N927NA, just now passing over the launch site.

There was a debate about this on some of the spaceflight forums, Spacex tested a water distribution systems on the OLM, but its a far cry from a water deluge system like those used at KSC. The volume just isn't there, and we also haven't seen any confirmation from SpX if they'll be using the water system for the launch. We'll hopefully find out soon!

It’s also possible that NASA dramatically overspent on the KSC facilities, it worked out well to use them for decades.

WAI showed a deluge system arriving from KSC by barge.
