I wish they’d make those people wear signs that show how tall they are so we could judge how big it really is. It does seem to be about the size of a 170. Those internal shocks are pretty cool, and they look like they give the wheels plenty of travel for landing on rough fields.

Those are giant flaps. I wonder what the stall speed is at full flaps. Dan

Given the size/weight and likely overall performance I'd guess 35-40Kt range. Van's motto is "total performance" so they're looking for speed, range, useful load etc in addition to STOL performance on this one.
Van's has an intro session scheduled Tuesday at Airventure. Perhaps they'll share more there.

Pretty certain these are 26" AK bushwheels or airstreaks (non certified light weight version) on the Vans. Big difference in energy absorption between an AK bushwheel and pretty much any other tire, but they also wear a lot faster on hard surfaces due to those qualities.

Yep, i have them on my 182. 8:50s are plenty and a good all purpose mission tire size decision…… at least for us out here.

I have been looking at a Zenth Cruzer, which is smaller and slower but also cheaper and easier to build.
It looks like it has huge flaps. Should have pretty good short field performance.

It looks like it has huge flaps. Should have pretty good short field performance. Here's a good YouTube channel on the Zenith. https://www.youtube.com/c/KitplaneEnthusiast1I think they are very cool. I actually like the look of them but some think they're butt ugly, and of course it's a tri-gear only. The cockpit visibility and stol performance speak for themselves though, and as you mentioned they are known for being simple to build. I'm a fan!

The prototype is sporting a Hartzell constant speed prop with a front-mounted governor. That puts the engineering prototype solidly into IO-390 territory, likely the largest of the available engine options.
Note the tail wheel features internal suspension - Vans has learned a lot from the Glastar/Sportsman lineup where there's a huge move away from leaf springs and toward the T3 suspension tailwheel.
Note the flap handle protrudes into the "flail injury" area in the cockpit. I'm definitely NOT a huge fan of this feature (although I love the "Johnson bar" flaps on the Sportsman).
Note the flaps are Fowler-style with external tracks - I'm predicting lots of head gashes happening on these babies.
Note the big square tail - Vans will be looking for longitudinal stability in order to put the airplane on floats.
Target speed range of sub-40kts to plus 140kts is entirely do-able once the airplane has good fairings.
As others have noted, that horizontal stabilizer / stabilator gives me pause. Then again, lots of "bush" planes have vortex generators under the horizontal stabilizer in order to keep the elevator's effectiveness at low speed / high AOA. This might turn into a winning combination with an all-flying stabiliator.
