I'm a student pilot and I am considering purchasing N8856B. It is a 6 cylinder 1958 Cessna 172 Skyhawk. It is located in Waterloo, IA (KALO). I live in Florida and have not yet seen it in person.

Is anyone familiar with this aircraft?

Any recommendations for a pre-purchase mechanic in Waterloo, IA?

Thanks,

Kyle

A '58 skyhawk in average condition is a sub $20K plane. You're gonna burn $2k easily in transaction/tranport costs. Look within driving distance. There's plenty of planes in florida.

I would not send any money or buy an airplane I haven't seen and haven't had inspected by MY guy. There was a recent thread on here where a buyer sent a deposit and turns out the plane had recently been totaled.

Most people actively avoid buying planes that have lived in Florida...

And if I lived in Iowa, I'd go to Arizona before Florida ... but for someone looking for a simple, inexpensive trainer who lives (and will base his plane) in Florida and probably resell soon ... I say look in Florida

Challenge to the forum:

Let's help Kyle determine a fair value or leads on a better alternative. At this price hard to find flying wings/four seats for less than 25k, no?

He needs to buy soon or he will be far to captivated by Barons and 340s to ever consider less. I'm afraid he's getting spoiled.

Kyle also needs a CFI. Someone in Tampa/KCLW.

Okay: I think he should rope a Texan BT'r to help him procure this one, with the O-320-E2D. That plane and engine are as easy to maintain as it gets. Perfect for PPL and airplane ownership initiation

The runout engine can easily turn this into a $40'000 junk 172. Too risky. Also, resale value is low because of the engine hours.

With a 20-30k budget, I'd look at Cherokees. You can find a nice flying one with plenty of hours left with that.

Regardless of which plane is purchased, a first time aircraft owner buying a plane in the $20-30m range will have to be willing to roll up his/her sleeves and work with a willing A&P IA to make the costs of ownership feasible. Florida isn't kind to aircraft in general, so active maintenance is required, and hangars ($$$) greatly help that.

A savvy buyer won't be as worried about engine times if they have money left over and a multitude of replacement options. An O-320 is the easiest engine to find freshly overhauled or low hrs and removed for part out, I'd never expect to pay more than $10-15k to put a good running engine on a Cherokee 140 or Cessna 172

I've seen the plane but never flown it or looked too close at it. It doesn't look too bad from 20 feet. I don't know what the asking price is on it now but a while back I thought it was too high. That's probably why it is still for sale. The guy who owns it bought it to learn to fly then built an RV. The RV is flying now so I doubt the 172 is flying much.

PM me if you want someone to do a prebuy on it or if you need it moved. I'm in the area.

Edit: I found the ad and current asking price. That's more where I would have expected it to be. He had it priced $10k higher before.

So, what's the fair price, 19k?
