Off the top of my head, Mardi Gras draws people to Mobile for a week or two every year (it is not the spectacle that it is in New Orleans). There is also Airbus and some business activity related to the oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

But none of those things have the kind of appeal as popular vacation spots or weekend getaways.

Competition can, but does not always, disrupt that alliance.

Monopoly breeds it.

I agree 100%. But many of these airports don't have the traffic to support 1 FBO much less 2. I have to fly into Mobile often..... what a rip off that place is BUT.... at least I have a place to fly in too.

I call ahead. I get them to email me their fees. The morons working there don't know a Pilatus from a Piper. They always mail the fees for a Piper and I hold them to.... "that's not what you told me on the phone".

Monopoly also breeds "poor service" and incompetence. Capitalize on it. I'm a hell raiser.

Jason,

My problem with your process is transparency of the fees. I shouldn't have to call to find out the fees. If FBO's posted the fees in clear language on their website or to a database that they keep up to date, I can then choose to participate in their fees or go elsewhere and NOT participate in their fees.

I admit that I have a problem with the high fees charged at many monopoly FBO airports. I think being able to clearly evaluate the fees and make an informed choice before incurring the costs is a reasonable expectation.

As much as I dislike the fees some FBO's charge, I detest their game of hidden fees.

No offense but that's just crazy. You won't call ahead out of spite? They haven't made it convenient enough "for you"?

FBO's will never post their fees... why would they? Where would they post them? I don't think every gas station in the country posts what they are changing for gas on a given day. Does the grocery store post how much their steaks are every day?

Charter operators don't call ahead as they already have contracts with places like Signature. I'd bet very few people call and inquire. All the more reason they'll never post them up.

IMO, "things" are getting testy here because there is a wide variance of definition of "overcharging". In some cases, fairly small "landing" or "handling" fees are charged and waived with reasonable amounts of fuel purchased. On the other hand, there are a few truly egregious examples of gouging.

The real problem is that circumstances exist where the gouging can occur. If it can, sooner or later, it will. If the $400 charge to the Citation that purchased fuel is correct, nothing more needs to be said to validate the problem.

This is a legitimate issue that needs to be addressed and corrected with some degree of reasonableness and uniformity. Being flippant about it and pretending that everyone is over reacting is nothing more than posing for attention.

$400 for a Citation that bought fuel? Is that a "he said she said"? Who was charged?

Here's the scoop:

Just got off the phone with the nice lady at Million Air.

Albany Airport charges $23.60 landing fee

Million Air charges $45.00 ramp fee waived with purchase of 30 gallons of 100LL
Full Serve 100LL is $5.01/gallon.

This is for an Aerostar.

I'm not seeing the cause for outrage (at Million Air) here.

But....

Lots of drama

I'd pay the ramp fee and move on.

So, here's a rather generic question:

Why would the FBO charge more for a Baron on their ramp than they would charge for a Bonanza? The Baron doesn't take up more room or require more work by the line guy, but the Baron buys MORE fuel...

Competition is good.

At KICT in January (a really, really nice Saturday) I pulled into Signature (just down from Yingling) and bought fuel... got the "only on a weekend discount" which was significant. And then, because I bought fuel (about 38 gallons if I recall), I got my tie-down spot for free.

I had a small propeller problem, and a day or two later went to Yingling. They diagnosed my problem and put me in a hangar overnight because "they had room".

I left my business trip to Wichita very happy. with both facilities.

All was good.

because it has 2 engines. Duh. It's the same reason that a twin comanche deserves more fees than a cessna stationair or piper saratoga. isn't it perfectly obvious ? it is to someone, i guess. Grates on me too, in my mini twin

Lets think. What entity required a fence and limited/controlled access around every airport?

Not "every" airport. Just Commercial ones.
