Just to be clear, my hat is off to them (Orenda) for trying to do something new in piston aviation.

"New"?

Newer engine than the engines in your plane or mine ;)

My hat is not off to anybody who uses, ahem, creative accounting in aviation.

Given that last editorial comment (lighter, cheaper, quieter, faster) this link should be posted or cross linked to the thread on GA engines and why they're so expensive. How old is this thing anyway? Looks like thirty years ago, which may prove the point on cost, always easier said than done.

It seems like the 740 lbs vs 270 lbs for a PT6a would be a deal killer for almost any application.

Per the EPI website, the installed weight was 1260 lbs per side. No way it competes with a PT6, except initial cost.
Original GTSIO-520 install weighed 930 lbs.

In the Ag world, it was advertised as a replacement for the R-1340 600HP radial. The sales pitch was that it was cheaper than a turbine but offered "turbine like" performance. I'm not sure if they ever even tried to advertise "turbine reliability" but if they did, that is certainly where they fell short.

How is that possible? A 426 Hemi (all iron weighs 725 pounds) there is no way an all aluminum engine with only six cylinders was more than a Hemi

That engine weighs 485 pounds. What were they hanging on it to double the weight?

Maybe a Gearbox makes up some of that difference? The rest...

They included engine mount, cowling, prop, accessories, hoses, turbocharger, wastegate, intercooler, oil, etc.

According to the TCDS, the GTSIO-520-F is 516 lbs dry, turbocharger is 34 lbs, or 550 lbs. They are claiming everything else weighs 380 lbs. Still seems a bit of a stretch, but the prop, exhaust, engine mount do add up.

The GTSIO-520-F dry weight includes the gear box built into the engine.

Installed weight.

The weights were for an "apples to apples" installation comparison. Included mounts, inter coolers, exhaust, oil coolers, radiators for the orenda, maybe props...the total power package installation. This was done probably to account for the extra equipment required to run a liquid cooled engine, and make a direct comparison possible. Pull off and weigh everything associated with one installation, then weigh everything associated with the other. If you have a 700 pound block, but require 650 lbs of equipment to operate it (notably radiators, but other goodies add up) you need the total install weight.

Google the EPI website. Interesting read about the Orenda conversion, and the ins and outs of putting an automotive core engine in an aircraft.

Wow, 702 lbs for TIGO-541-E1A.

(Actually, the TCDS says 706 lbs!)

It would be nice to compare the diesel EPS engine to these weights.

EPS claims 45 ibs heavier than a 300 hp turbo engine.

The real issue with weight comparisons is trying to compare total installed weights. Figuring out what accessories, props, and other required ancillary pieces add makes a big difference. It also lends itself to a lot of creative accounting by new engine designers. I've followed alternative engine developments for the last 40 years. Dynacam and Deltahawk, anyone?

There's a blast from the past! Orenda aka "Horrendous." I cannot recall one person that thought it would work but clearly there were many as untold millions were spent on developement. There has to be photos of the King Air type install somewhere. I saw it at OSH. It was pretty special to see all of that crammed under the cowling where a PT6 belonged.
