I took the ATP written back in June before the rules changed. I figure I can knock a couple AMUs off the price of a 737 type by combining the two and avoiding an ATP only program. Anyone else interested in doing the same? Location and timeframe are flexible. Best, Jim

I'm already signed up for the 7 Oct 737 class with Higher Power in Dallas. It's costing the VA about $8 AMUs.

Heck yeah! If we can wait till I add another 500 hrs to my log book. I took the written back in July also. Just need a few more hours to qualify for the ATP.

I need to look into the VA paying for mine like Casey. I guess my post 9/11 GI Bill will do it.

I've always wanted to add a 737 type on. Most likely never ever use it.

How many days are needed to do the training and type ride? I need to look into doing this.

If you end up looking to share an intial on type let me know. I may well be interested just for S&G (or self improvement...)

Course is about 12-14 days depending on sim schedule. There is a good amount of "Self Study" the month before (doing that now) so the systems and other ground school is done in a week. Week of classes in Dallas. 5-6 days of sims in either Dallas or Charlotte. HPA pays the DFW-CLT ticket.

Post 9/11 pays 100%. HPA makes the paperwork easy. I think most guys say it burns 8 or so months of eligibility. It's probably the only use I will ever get out of my GI bill, as no seaplane places take it, and the A&P schools don't work with my schedule, and I'm not going back to school to finish my PHD.

My only costs are food and the PHF-DFW and CLT-ORF tickets to get there. I have a metric butt ton of free Holiday Inn nights (no joke, had 1.2 Million reward points.. I was paying for 1500+ nights a year on my credit card at last job)

With the VA, you pay up front for the course, and the VA sends you a check. So I'm technically out 8 AMU, but will get it from the VA in a couple weeks after finishing.

Enjoy it. I did mine in January with Ted Wright and we had a blast.

Take your time on the sim, remember to use the co-pilot for everything.. including setting the auto-pilot!

PM me if you have anything you're struggling with.

It's good practice, and counts as BFR-IPC anyway!

If I only had 2 weeks to give to this, I think it would be a blast!

Too much other stuff going on for now though.

Robert

Thanks for the responses guys.

Does anyone have experience with FTI in Denver? It's a bit cheaper than HP, an easier commute from/to Omaha, but only one day of ground school so a lot more self-preparation is required. Thanks, Jim

I would love to do this. Pm me if you need a buddy.

I am confused, the VA pays for this for some?

Mike

Yes. I used the post 9/11 GI Bill, which pays 100%. Not sure what normal GI Bill pays, I think 65%

I got my ATP earlier this month. I'll wait for someone else to pick up the tab for the type rating....... That and I still have a couple more years until retirement.

My attempt to get my ATP at All ATPs was a less than excellent experience, and I didn't feel like dealing with them again. Higher Power was a fun, although tough at times two weeks.

Renting a King Air to do my ATP check was going to be cost prohibitive to say the least.
