China wrests Control of Icon A5 from the California based Icon Corp.
It did the same with MOONEY AIRCRAFT Corp a decade+ ago and that company went bust!

Mooney has been “bust” more times than I can keep track.

They have certainly changed hands many times.

In the 71 years that they've been here in Kerrville TX they filed bankruptcy three times, twice under a Mooney name. Once in 1969 after spending too much developing a pressurized single that didn't make it (M22). Again in the summer of 2001 they filed and then the entire holding company that bought their assets (and owned several other companies) filed in 2004.

Even after the Chinese ownership, they are now owned primarily by a group of U. S. investors. They haven't been producing airplanes since late 2019, but still employ about 35 people to run the Mooney Factory Service Center and to manufacture parts to support the 7000 Mooneys flying.

Company: Gee Bee Aeroproducts
Aircraft: hang glider
Not sure if the plant in otay Mesa Mexico is still open , final production was in Mexico.
Labor is 2.75 per hour .

When the market is filled and no production

Low production, higher cost

Cirrus and Continental are both majority Chinese-owned now, too, right?

The Commander Aircraft Company was also purchased by a Chinese family several years ago. Seems to be a trend.

The sun comes up in the east

Pilots run out of gas

And aircraft companies go bankrupt.

Ditto Diamond Aircraft for the Chinese GA portfolio.
I don’t believe the former Chinese owner of Mooney still has an equity stake, though there is a big note out there that somebody owns and is, sadly, what defines ownership or at least control now.

Not sure what their interest in Icon would be. Thought it was interesting that they bought Cirrus, maybe for some IP from the jet. Looks a lot like some of their new military drones. Maybe with the Icon they want drones that they can launch at our ships from the water

Since 2000 Chinese entities have bought:

Continental Motors
Theilert Motors
ECI
Superior Airparts
Cirrus
Diamond
Eclipse
Mooney
Glasair
Searay
Icon
Enstrom
Brantley
Hiller

Of that list I believe Mooney, Eclipse, and Enstrom returned to Western ownership via bankruptcy. (I know for sure this was the case for Enstrom as I work there.)

Continental, Theilert, ECI, and Superior comprise of well over 50% of the piston aircraft engine manufacturing in the world.
