Looking for “Bolt On 4 Point” harness recommendations for our Super Cub.
Thanks in advance.
The pictures below were some seatbelt hardware I found online. I’d prefer not to weld tabs.
Thanks in advance.

In these old birds, the mounting locations are not optimal for harnesses. In my J5 and prior J3, I added the brackets like the ones you show in your first post. Try to find a spot on a frame tube near a weld cluster if you can. putting the bracket out in the middle of the tube is the best spot for the belt angles, but not great for structural integrity. some of my harness straps were off at a slight angle for that reason. Some people just loop stranded steel cable around a weld cluster and use the crimp connectors similar to control cables to secure the loop. it looks scary, but it’s actually the same as piper installed for the lap belts in a cub with pretty small cable.
there’s a raging ongoing debate among cub folks about grabbing a frame tube mid span. some say it will bend the tube unacceptably, others say the tube bending absorbs energy in the crash. since crash severity is highly variable, it’s a tough call. my feeling is that in a low deceleration crash, anything works fine. in a high decel crash, you’re dead anyway. a deformed tube in a medium decel crash is a good trade for saving your head from hitting the panel.
The general consensus is that shoulder harnesses are absolutely necessary even if they aren’t optimally located. i agree. the FAA is very lenient in what they allow, preferring people install just about anything rather than go without.
I used the Wag Aero harness kit and brackets for my planes. They have a lot of adjustment to accommodate about any setup. The bolt on solutions can be removed/changed in the future if you want to try something else.
The FAA advisory circular AC43.13-2b chapter 9 gives a lot of good guidance on how to install properly. give that a good read before you proceed.

Even a bracket clamped around a tube of soft metal or a weld cluster will slow your noggin down considerably before any possible failure.
There are some concerns about the birdcage structure in some of those PA-18 front seats being easy to hit your head on. A helmet never hurt.
The first thing I did when I bought my J-3 was install a set of Wag-Aero shoulder harnesses and seat belts. Too many hapless aviators have died in off airport touchdowns, even at Cub speeds when the control stick ended up inside their brain cavity after the motor quit.
I saw a black and white photo once, years ago. It made quite an impression.
Dude! What’d you get?
Wait a minute, you’re senior to me!
Therefore, I suggest you remove all restraints and engage in high α, power-on YouTube video content creation of you dragging in and landing on some small gravel bar that you could’ve just dispensed with the theatrics and did a full-stall 3-point from a 1.3 VSO approach onto. Bonus points if you drag your wheels across water or fly so slow and loaded up that a single spark plug failure would cause you to stall and spin.
Even more bonus points if you post videos post-suspension about how unfairly the FAA has treated you.
Bwahahaha. I keed.
Congrats on the new jet, Scotty. I’ll give you a call.

Waiting on my call Dan. And it makes pup-put noises not whining noises! LOL
I’ve looked at Hooker and Schroth. Does anyone have a photo to share of the attach points (non welded tab)?
Much appreciated!
Scott
