Trip talk? Brand X talk? At any rate...after mastering my little strip in New Mexico, on Thursday morning, my wife and I went on a dawn patrol. We flew at 2-400 feet all over the country near us. Up a couple of magical canyons, looked at a movie set where they are making a western (it was before any filming was taking place). Found a couple of indian ruins from goodness knows how long ago. Just explored. Flew back to our house and landed and put the airplane away. Friday morning, got up and packed, carried it out to my airplane, loaded up and set off for Bogert Texas. Not really clear on the forecast, but increasing obvious when looking at my G3X garmin, the weather there was deteriorating...winds across the runway at 20, gusting to 30. Since it was a bit of a fuel stretch to go there (would have landed with (according to the dynon) around 4.5 gallons), I bailed to Amarillo. Rowdy wind there too, but I had 6.5 gallons so was no strain. My next stop was going to be Ardmore OK for lunch. However, as I was setting off there was a weather notice describing thunderstorms and general nastiness toward Ardmore, but I thought it was worth a look. Well...the weather picture on the Garmin was troubling. I pressed on for another 20 minutes. Amarillo was getting stormed on, so, with no improvement ahead, I bailed South to Lubbock. Hung out for a while, reset and went a more southerly route...without weather problems. Overnighted in Texarkana...cool place. Finished up today. I averaged around 120 mph over the ground (nice little tailwinds), around 19 statue miles per gallon on the avgas. Finally after travelling around 1200 statute miles or so, and around 15 miles from Wetumpka, I slowed down, opened the window and just cruised in with my left elbow sitting on the window sill. Greased a landing on the grass and put it away.

Ok, so I wasn't going 300KTs. And I wasn't over the weather. But the overall feeling left by the flight (both ways, really) was flying a competent, comfortable, USEFUL airplane. Even if the only use is for fun!

I love my Carbon Cub. Sorry about the lack of pictures, especially for the dawn patrol, but we forgot the camera.

Jim

Good share but the lack of pictures will probably loose you a few +1's.

I slowed down, opened the window and just cruised in with my left elbow sitting on the window sill.

I think I could really find peace by doing that.

I did. Great way to unwind.

Cool beans, Michael. And you feel like a real aviator with the nose up whilst you taxi!

Penman how did you talk them into letting you fly the new planes? I'm so jealous!

Indeed. But since we just walked out to the airplane in our pajamas (being on our own property and all) we forgot our phones. A stunning violation of everything related to safety with to respect of wear what you want to walk out in, but pretty cool anyway! I solemnly promise to never do that again!

Factory Experimental. It's a fair bit lighter than the xCub. I'm leaning way more to the FX than the xCub as the I like the avionics better and they had an awesome autopilot (with wing leveler)........I know, I know, a plane like this should NEVER be on autopilot........

as Jim noted, they are such a pleasure to fly, visibility unrestricted and the slow speed........geez, felt like a helicopter.

Jim is a lucky man.....I forgive him for the iPhone and pj's snafu :peace:

Michael: Thank you for the forgiveness! I do appreciate it. Yup, if I was in the market today I'd have to look hard at the FX...especially with the new 3rd class medical rules. I never lost...or even got near to losing...my medical, but...The weight ability would be very cool. And the way they set it up, you get to build an experimental airplane with factory quality. Yup!

Now, you'd get more speed with the X cub...but the price is somewhat higher...and while the O360 is a great engine, the CC340 is probably a bit stronger (that's what they told me when I wavered from the CC toward the TopCub for a bit. And I suspect a lot of the speed comes from the constant speed prop...which just adds complexity. And the spring steel gear...surely is faster, but there's a lot to be said for the forgiving nature of the old Cub bungee gear...especially if you take the bungees out and add AOSS shock absorbers. Finally, if you build the FX, you can do your own condition inspections and have the minimal limitations of having an experimental airplane...compared to the certified nature of the Xcub.

And all of the new cubs have a different flap setup which is actually better. As to the autopilot? I wouldn't have hated having it during much of the last 25 hours I put on the airplane last week. Hell, I'm half tempted to sell and go the FX route myself...

Edit: Oh, and the 44 gallon fuel capacity would be HUGE!
