There's a lot of flying outside the US that is exactly that way..
First time I ever flew a King Air 350, I was the PIC, taking off from Afghanistan, and even though it's on the same type as the straight 300s I was flying, there's some differences in the prop and fuel system (350ER).
The B100 was in Africa.
