This is a game changer.

When the kids were younger it was used on every flight. It's much less frequent now but still used by both kids and adults on maybe 25% of flights.

Unplanned stops aren't fun.

On a trip from Wichita to Aspen a long time ago in a T210, I had a passenger use a plastic bag the oxygen masks came in, slowed down, opened a window, and threw it out. Did not blow back in, fortunately.

Especially from 40,000 ft.

I have a whole room dedicated to biology, with dividers, even.

I did modify my "flush" toilet to be a dry system, however. That blue toilet fluid has cost owners $millions in total with corrosion fixes. Saved 15 lbs, too.

Is it single-use or multi-use? Does the user have to do any work to process the waste?

Multi use.

No user actions.

After flight it is used, the flight crew closes up the bag and throws it away, then installs a replacement that has been prepared.

Secret is this:

https://www.tractorsupply.com/tsc/produ ... ding-40-lb

I removed the "flushing" toilet and put in a 3D printed bucket. The "ammunition" is a double bagged amount of pellets with the bag held by a large rubber band. After flight, just remove the band and close up the bags, toss, and put a new one in. Easy.

The pellets are highly absorbent, kills smells, cheap, and can stay in place for long periods without worry, even in very cold conditions. It also doesn't leak, which ends the corrosion worries. Indeed, it has a mild desiccating property when tends to dry the interior of the cabin. I toss the pellets every 6 months if not used to keep them fresh. The bag above lasts forever.

The spares are kept inside the toilet since there is space there.

The air flow in the Citation is front to rear and my toilet room is at the rear, so any smells go out the rear bulkhead.

BTW, the "flushing" toilet has one reservoir. The first user gets clean water to flush with which drains back into the reservoir and mixes with the fluid. Every user after that gets dirty water to flush with. I had imagined there were two compartments, but no, that's not how it works. Eww.

I worry a little about planes that are orphaned. Hard enough to get replacement parts these days with supply line issues for planes that are still being made.

Ironically, the older planes are having no parts problems.

There is nothing you can't get for a legacy Citation. From multiple sources in most cases. At reasonable cost.

Meanwhile, some newer airplanes like Mustang and 525 series do have shortages of stuff. Precoolers are an example.

The folks who avoid older airplanes due to part supply worries have it backwards.

There is a reason not to buy a Mustang, it comes with a built in headwind.

Other than the speed, when you flew the Mustang, what did you think about it?

Sorry, just trying to weed my garden.

Should I go start a Citation V thread?

Does this setup retain the function of a belted passenger seat?
(I know this was talked about in another thread but I'm blanking right now on where.)

Gross. Is that true of all Citations, even newer ones?

Yes, the "human interface" part of it is exactly the same, just the stuff below the toilet seat is changed.

When the toilet isn't being used, there is a seat cushion lid that covers it that is the belted seat.

I can't say, but I suspect so.

More gross is carefully removing the reservoir, carrying it out of the plane, emptying it, cleaning it, and refilling it.

With the pellet bag system, just close up the bag and toss.

It is kind of like a really big Travel John. The pellets are very absorbent so there really isn't any free liquid after use, and the pellets are so cheap and light that putting a lot of them in there gives you ample "capacity".

My 501’s flushing toilet has two reservoirs. One dirty and one clean. I got rid of the dirty bucket and replaced with a double layer contractor bag filled with kitty litter. It’s just a potty now. No blue juice and no flushing. Easy to clean up and replace the bag. I may try the horse bedding pellets. Probably lighter. Thanks for sharing that, Mike.

Agree on the gross factor in all aspects.

And I suspect that many, if not most, “flushing” potty systems in aircraft are single reservoir, mine is too. Monogram Systems seems to have supplied the lav for many aircraft. Their models are of similar design, and many of the variants are basically different size and shape of reservoir depending how it needs to fit in the specific airplane.

I’m surprised Nishant’s 501 has two reservoirs, actually. Wonder if it was a different supplier.

Mike, your bag/pellet system sounds great. Where does the described rubber band fasten? Is the bucket not attached to the underside of the seat? I dont see a rim to put a bag over.

Here is the bucket:

I designed the part and had someone 3D print it, seal it, and paint it. The chamfer is needed to clear the base shape due to the fuselage curvature.

The top rim has a bulbed edge. You fold the bag over the top rim and use a large rubber band to hold it in place.

There is a simple guide at the bottom to keep it in place. There is plenty of space around it for keeping spare bags ready to go.

Reading this makes me even more appreciative of not having a lav onboard. I have thousands of passenger hours in my plane, I’ve never diverted for a bathroom, but have had an occasional passenger use a travel john that probably didn’t think they would be happy using a travel John. But then use it with great customer satisfaction. These posts of carrying out the embarrassing bucket or giant bag of whatever and then be responsible for cleaning are really gross ;-)
