Chuck, thank you for the information. I've been lucky enough to be the custodian of the 185 for 41 years and it's been a great run. Best, Ron

Is that a little corrosion in a crack? Or did it break where it is clamped....from flexing at that point..?
Jeff Jeff, I discussed the break with the owner but honestly don't remember the consensus. Aubey can certainly tell you though, in detail. Aubey, where are you? Actually we spoke this morning about the crash of a friend in a Mooney 201. Jgreen

Always in awe of the art-deco beauty of the 195: Even the crank handle of the pilot's roll-down window is a study in period art form. I flew with legendary Larry Bartlett in his 195, and was fascinated. Ron, I wonder if I got to meet you back in the days of the Skywagon New Year's fly ins at Lajitas, TX?. My 180 was XB-ZAB. That has been quite some years ago, but I still recall taxiing down main street to the local filling station to top off, and Henry, the beer guzzling goat. Then there was the party... Or was it Baja? With luck I'll see you at Johnson Creek. Best,
TN

Having grown up in a 170, a 195 is a dream airplane for me. I have flown/flown in two of them - a 1949 owned by Jim Fassino in Illinois and Richard Pulley in Texas. While in Texas, I got to meet and spend time talking with Jim McClain. I suppose also the Barron family is pretty well steeped in 195 culture, though I know Dillon from 170s more than anything else. I'd jump at the chance to fly one from startup to shutdown, but I'm not too proud to fly with someone like Jim. He said that he flew with an airline pilot that used to own a Sukhoi and and lots of tailwheel time, and he was about a 25 hour transition before they both were comfortable with the sign off. I tend to believe it, if for no other reason than needing to know how to make a bad situation not a disaster. Richard swears that the 195 is one of the best crosswind airplanes that he's flown, and he's flown a bunch. He's currently got the 170A be bought in college, a nice 180 that he keeps in Alaska, and the 195 that lives in Fredericksburg with his 170. I want to grow up to be like Richard. I've found the 170. I've found the 180. I've found the Beech 18. I just need to find the 195.

Regarding the crosswind gear, I have a hard time imaging not lining up straight down the runway. Is it hard to get it into your head that you're going to touch down in a crab? I remember seeing a beautiful 195 at Van Sant many years ago with crosswind gear. I had no idea at the time that there was such a thing and thought the axles were broken. It does look strange when parked with it's wheels akimbo. Found a short video of one taxiing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RB9aHYb8aqwLast question, do they make crosswind gear for the Stearman ?

Arguing with JGG about LOP, Twins vs Single, closing your eyes while I learn to land a 195, none of that is work. Now if we are talking SEC football them there's fighting words. You're going to "work" that argument. That from an Indiana basketball nut. No football in IN Unless you're talking Go Colts! Back to round engines, burps and cool tail draggers.

Tom, we went to at least 3 of the New Years fly-in's at Lajitas. Yes, Henry the beer drinking goat was a hoot. My 185 is Flag red with a little white trim, N70006. Might also have met you in Baja over the years. We may head up to Johnson Creek this year, been a few years since we went. Ron

A long time ago I used to visit, at FTW, with a 195 and Baron owner named Dutch. I understand that he and his son had a boatload of 195 stuff somewhere in Louisiana. I'm not sure about the spelling of his last name but something like "Reyanga".
