Jesse, Nice new ride. The 421C's are solid aircraft. If you need tech advice call Tony Saxton at TAS Aviation. He is the best Cessna twin guy in the country.

Jesse,

Sorry for all the questions here, but since you did this I've been thinking about it too..

How does the 421 noise level compare to the P? Also, have you heard any comparisons from your passengers (folks who have now flown in both)? What is the service ceiling and cabin differential pressure of a 421? How about short field performance compared to the P?

I don't have much single pilot experience in cabin class airplanes but one thing I remember was that passenger management workload went up (moving from a baron to a KA in this case). Pax are more-or-less stuck in their seat in a baron but in a bigger plane they can move around. Its was mostly just trimming to deal with it but also some work to get them buckled up & such for turb & landing and/or the occasional chatty person who wanted to come up front - or just questions like "where's the beer?". Most of this was not a big deal, sometimes it was fun but on occasion it added to an already busy workload. I'd be interested in hearing your stories!

Congrats & thanks for the info!

I flew a 58P 30 years ago and I now have a 421CTL.
1.Noise level is very good in a 421, you don't need head sets. Passengers love the sound level.
2.Service ceiling is 30,000 feet and press/diff is 5.3 max/5.0 normal.
3. 421C is better than 58P on short fields. I use a 2500 foot runway at sea level standard day no problem.
4. passengers don't move much and when they do trim is not a problem.
5.I have a pilot isolation button that takes care of chatty passenger's.

On Sunday a BTr came out with Don Lawrenz to inspect the 58P. Monday morning we did the flight test. By the afternoon she was gone. No advertising, no deposit; just a gentlemen's agreement and a smooth transaction. I'll let the new buyer announce himself after he gets home.

...
What an airplane! Congrats to the yet to be named new owner...

I've now introduced myself on this thread. Thanks to Jesse, Don and John for a fantastic transaction!

Congrats Jesse! Did you get a chance to try the full motion sim at simcom? I went there for it but it was out of order while I was there. The FTD was good but I was hoping for the motion.

What are you figuring for performance to get 1380 pounds of payload 800 nm? I can't get close to that but I'm running ROP and have a useful load slightly below 2200 pounds. I get about 215 true at FL200 burning 43g/hour.

Spencer,

Today I did a worst case scenario. It was hot (standard + alot), and I kept the plane moving at 65% power after climbing 900fpm to FL210. Based on today's performance, the numbers I quoted earlier could be done during the winter, or at 55% power (205 kts), or LOP.

ROP at 65% I am burning 42gph getting 212-215 ktas at FL210 on a hot afternoon. If I were to do it today at that speed, I would be looking at 6 175lb passengers with 30lbs baggage each for a total payload of 1230lbs. I would start with 215 gallons, could fly 826 miles down range after climbing to FL210, and have 45 minute reserve allowing for 159NM to spare.

You will likely catch me at 55% power burning about 17.5/side doing 205ktas on the hot days at FL210. On my next flight I plan to experiment with higher/slower to look for max range.

Best,

And to John - What Jerry said.......

A client of mine flies his 421B at 15 GPH. 195-200 kts at FL21
It has taken some adjustment

I'm sure it will do it based on the ROP performance and my experience in the 58P. I need a better engine monitor first.

Matt,

I have about 150 hours in the plane now. It is getting a few "upgrades" as we speak. When its done, I will write a report detailing my transition experience, my likes and dislikes, and compare it to the P.

Best,

You caught me... I've owed Twin Cessna flyer a mag article for months, but I better crank this out first.
