You aren't the shops customer, even during a transaction, the seller is the customer- you represent buyers... And if you have a bad experience with a shop, why would you guide another customer to them? Are you saying all shops are bad?
Brian,
In reality, what you said couldn’t be further from the truth, not only does the shop consider me a customer, they consider me a repeat customer. The shops we use try very hard to keep me happy, because I bring them a lot of business. I had a situation recently, where an employee of one of my clients thought I was lying because I said we could get the airplane into a certain shop, he called him and they said no way.
I’m not saying that all shops are bad, but have I had bad experiences at every one of them, yes. Yes, I have, every single shop I have used in the last 25 years has pissed me off from time to time. Some we do not use at all, some we do. It depends on if it was a mistake or an integrity issue.
The real trick is knowing which shop we have the best chance with, and knowing how to manage their process for the best outcome.

You are trying to make an argument that there's this secret way to economically operate Citations, what you are missing is that many people in the Citation ecosystem have been doing just what you claim to have discovered and they have been doing it for decades.

Sucks to have the one and only talking point you've found taken away, doesn't it.
The customer is the guy who walks through their door with an airplane. Period. The bill may be paid by the seller, the buyer, both, the owner, operator or by someone else. The shop doesn't care. They know the bill will be paid.

I always love a good Mike/Chip row, but seriously, what's the point of this thread? In the same way that I would not take a 45 year old Corvette to a Chevy dealer dealer for maintenance or service, I would not take a 45 year old Citation to Textron. There have been numerous examples in this thread of big shops and the OEMs screwing up. You yourself posted that corrosion was missed (skipped) by the OEM and was caught by another shop. So going to a big shop doesn't mean you get better results, which is Mike's entire point. The bottom line is that the owner (or someone that works for the owner in the case of a larger org with a flight department) must be personally involved with the maintenance of their aircraft no matter who is maintaining it. Otherwise they will get substandard service and will pay a premium for it. As for dealing with recalcitrant sellers, that is just part of the boom bust cycle in all markets. The same things happen in housing, art, cars, etc. When the market is hot and prices are high, sellers don't think they need to be accommodating and as long as the market is hot, they don't. If you want or have to buy in such a market you either need to take the risk or hold off until the market cools and sellers are forced to make the buyers happy.

100%
I’ve never said otherwise. One of my favorite Citation shops is a very small shop.
I think the confusion comes from the fact that we typically take pre-buys to larger shops, that’s so that the seller is more comfortable with the shop.

Robert T Exactly. If the seller is paying, it only makes sense to want the "best" which is generally equated to most expensive. (I think we all know that's not necessarily true, but by and large a buyer is going to feel better having work done at Stevens than at Bobs mobile mechanic, no matter how good Bob is) The engineering fee for painting over mild corrosion on a non critical part is a good example. As a buyer would you rather hear "we sanded and painted some corrosion" or "we sent detailed photos to Textron who did an engineering analysis on the spot of corrosion found and gave us a detailed remediation plan that we then followed (aka sand and paint)"? One costs 150 bucks and one 2150 but if you're not paying for it which would you prefer? Big shops have big overhead: high paid employees, marketing, big insurance policies, fancy facilities on big name airports etc etc. Big overhead means higher prices across the board.

Well said Justin.
Speaking of insurance, do you guys know that some small shops don't have it?
That is another concern, if a seller trust us to take their airplane to a shop for prebuy and something happens to it, it has to be a shop that can cover the loss.
I also have a friend who owned a small shop that went bankrupt, all those airplanes, various stages of disassembly behind a locked hangar door.
Not FUD, just facts... these are the things we have to consider.

I said he was a friend, I'm not going to post any specifics on the internet. No more than I would if the same happened to you and your company.
If you want to give me a call, I'll tell you the story... I'll even give you his name and phone number and you can call him yourself. He'd probably rather not talk about it, but what do you care? I am sure he'd prefer that over it being shared publicly.
There's other Beechtalkers that know the story, plus why would I make something up?
The only thing that I am spreading is that people should ask questions, like "do you have insurance?" As far as bankruptcy, any shop can go bankrupt, but yes it is less likely with larger shops.
FWIW avionics shops seem to be the worst.

Here's what I can say about Bruse's shop. When I had my Mooney Ovation in the Chicago Land area, I tried a few local shops to service the plane. None were very good, truly knew the quirks of the Mooney. I called Byerly since they are listed as a Mooney service center and flew the Mooney there.
They were top notch. Did the work they said they would do and was fairly priced. They knew my experiences and it was a flight to get there, but felt they treated me really fairly. In fact, I had an AP issue they addressed and when I was concerned about the repair they immediately said to bring it back. Found out it was user error!
I get a SEP is not a Jet but I do feel that I was treated well and would be no matter the equipment. My .02
