I would think it would shift through the gears just fine. The load from the prop would be very similar to the load from the wheel. If this plane was going to have a motorcycle engine anyway, money was saved by not having to buy a constant speed prop. It doesn't sound like a terrible idea to me.

Well, the engine is from a 2016 or newer FJR (all previous years had 5-speed transmissions). 147 hp at the crank so there are wheaties there. I have a 2014 and love it.

The FJR engine has been one of the most dependable, bullet proof and long lasting motorcycle engines ever designed.

Interesting project, would need to see video evidence.
