I've been infatuated with the A5 since I saw the first video. I can see living on a lake and having one of these bad boys for puttering around and taking short hamburger hops.

When I compare the enclosed cockpit of the A5 to something like a Quicksilver MXII (for $25 AMUs) on floats where I can hang my flip-flops in the breeze, I wonder if I'll be able to keep the cockpit cool during the Texas summers.

I don't remember reading anything about A/C or removable doors

There are 2 gear options on the a5..

1 - retractable gear. Electrically driven. Manual folding wings.

2 - no landing gear, electric folding wings.

I wonder how many people will choose the latter.

Sheldon,

I like plane porn as much as the next guy but you should give a guy a heads up, kind of like X rated movies. Any videos that have the words or video of a float plane, sea plane or amphibian should be duly noted in the thread title. I'm trying to go cold turkey on this sea plane monkey that is on my back.

So what position # are you? :peace:

They actually talk about removable windows, so that'd solve that one. Go to Icon aircraft.com and look at "interior photos".

I believe their claim is for the first FAR Part 23 production aircraft. The Ercoupe was certified under CAR 3.

All this effort for an LSA that is good for nothing? If you're gonna go to all this effort, why not make a legit traveling machine?

Yea, look at the Piper Cub! It was a real flop............. I like to go fast and travel as much as you do ( I have logged 40 hours in the last 45 days), but dont think for a minute I dont get a little airplane woody thinking about this thing sitting in my hanger on Friday and tied up beside my boat on Saturday morning!!!

All of you are missing my point.

How much more effort does it take to make a legitimate, traveling machine version of this airplane? Why spend all this money for an LSA that's "good for nothing". That means it's just "OK" at everything but does nothing really well. It's just a waste of time.

All this time and effort and money and you have the "jet ski" of airplanes. Whoopee!

Actually LSA is better for a lot of pilots as you dont need to renew your medical to fly it. Its good for a second plane to goof around with. I have a C185 for that. :D

You missed HIS point! this guy is brilliant. I have been following him since the very beginning. Take a little time and read his Bio. He is trying to bring people into aviation that have never even set behind the controls of a private plane, let alone flown one. To do what you are suggesting would require an aquisition cost far beyond most peoples comfort zone/ability.
I have no idea, but it would not surprise me if there is not a " Icon Skunk Works" secretly working on what you are talking about. But they have to crawl before they can walk.
Dont underestimate this guy, he has assembled the absolute very best of aviation gene pool and I believe this might just be the next Cessna 172, only this one will float on purpose!!

It takes a LOT more effort to make a certified part 21 airplane than it does to certify an LSA (which is "certified" by consensus).

Thing of it is, Jason, the current market is gaga for LSA, and not so much for GA airplanes. Makes sense, when you think on it...the flying population is aging, so going for a market that can use their drivers licenses instead of medicals makes sense.

Icon is just hitting the market that is moving...at a price-point that is attractive. No question that a traveling machine would have more utility, but an LSA is easier (read: cheaper) to get certified and on the market. That's why we are seeing a lot more innovation in that market.

Jim
