I'm not particularly impressed with the scout. Sort of like a husky - they have big engines and big wings for stol ops, but they only need the big engine because the airplane is so darn heavy. An old 7AC champ fitted with a 100hp engine will outperform a scout in many ways.

If you want a "bigger" stol 2-seater try to finagle a ride in one of the few flying bearhawk patrol's. Amazing plane, goes everywhere a super cub goes, but is 50mph faster on the same fuel

haven't seen this listed, if one has a rear cargo door and the other doesn't, go with the one with the door. i had a citabria before my current bo and it was an option i planned to add if i had kept it. getting stuff out of the back was a chore without the cargo door.

I currently own a 1997 Citabria with 160 hp engine. The flaps make it a lot easier to spot land than a Decathlon. The Scout will also get off the ground much quicker - longer wings, higher-lift airfoil, partial flaps. To me, the aerobatic fun in the Decathlon wears out pretty fast.

I thought maybe they'd hand out ACA model code decoder rings at their booth, but alas no.

Based on what you said I would say Scout. But only if you are really serious about getting into light bush flying. I have a friend with a Maule who was going to do that. It sits unloved in the hangar.

I've got a Super D and it's a delight to fly. I just fly it around running creeks and piddling. Go get lost and found again and pattern work. Landing a tailwheel in crosswinds never gets boring. Big tires would just make it more challenging I guess.

What do you want? Buy that.

Don't be afraid of a wood spar, unless you're talking about a plane with a 1970's fabric job, and pencil whipped annuals where you cannot adequately assess the spar's condition. Any fool recovering wooden wings should be flogged if they do not perform a very thorough inspection for not only the obvious wood rot (unlikely), but much more important, glue joint failures and compression failures, etc (which I have seen). It takes a fair amount of abuse to damage a properly built wood wing, probably more abuse than any metal wing could tolerate... the fabric: not so much.

If a wood spar is in good shape, and the plane is hangared, then I wouldn't think twice about it.

My Super Decathlon flying is 15% aerobatic & 85% just flying. I've taken trips, "grass-hopped" into some short turf fields without trouble and enjoyed every minute I've flown One-Alpha-Charlie. Define your mission and choose, but the Super Decathlon covers a broader flying footprint than the Scout. Unless you're a bush pilot, you aren't going to fly into super tight spots anyway, and if you are a bush pilot, you wouldn't be asking the question; you'd be posting pictures of your Scout. The cargo door is an easy aftermarket instal and if you're going to camp, you'll appreciate it in both airplanes.
