Reminds me of the time I was spreading manure at a new farm I had just purchased. I saw a guy walking across the field in the wet manure I had just spread, I stopped the tractor and he goes to present himself as my new neighbour and asked me if I could call him a day before the next time I would be spreading manure so he can plan accordingly. I somewhat lost his phone numbers over the years. Username Protected wrote: At the Easton Pa airport, there is a small house across the street from the end of the runway 36. One day I flew the approach into RW 18 which has a down slope leading directly into the garage of the house. Also the runway is 1950 feet plus or minus long so it is a tight fit for a Baron anyway. Shortly after touchdown I realized that the plane was not going to stop on the runway so I pushed on the power and went around. Needless to say the homeowner was quite unhappy that I made so much noise. He was already at the counter of the FBO at Easton when I came in after changing direction and landing uphill, again, over the roof of his house but this time a little more quietly, since I wanted to put it on the numbers and leave some uphill roll out room. He was having a rant about us stupid pilots who dont know how to fly blah blah blah. My only real answer was to apologize for making so much noise, but isn't it better to listen to a go around instead of have us come through the garage door?? I dont know how long he has lived at the end of the runway but I know that the airport has been there longer than he has, which is the usual problem with small airports in the country and almost everywhere else too. Just like "right to farm" which means that sometimes things smell funny in the country, airports that have been encroached should have "right to fly" signs on all 4 corners. Maybe the people who move to the country for peace and quiet and tranquility might think twice about buying next door. We get the same crap at our airport which has been encroached and is fenced in and has trees that block the runway approaches because they grow and we cant cut them down. Our Beech airplanes in particular are pretty noisy and I draw an occasional complaint too. However I am not going to move just because one neighbor is a chronic bitch artist.

She's just not the type of person who needs to be living in the country. The problem is when regulators don't recognize that the issue is a cultural divide and they try to appease her through exercise of their power. Does the state have a 'right to farm' law ?

They went absolutely hysterically crazy, cussed me until they were blue in the face and moved away. I even volunteered to plant trees, anything...no I had ruined their "view". To me their "view" of life had been ruined a long time ago. The small town nearby still talks about how despicable I am/was to do such a thing. Sam, youre a true outlaw!

To All I purchased a farm a couple years ago and immediately had members of the community, not just neighbors, approach me with "ideas" on what "I" should do with "my" newly acquired property. Needless to say none of these ideas were in the same ballpark of my intentions. I received pushback because i was doing with "my" property what "I" wanted to and it did not benefit " them".
After months of hearing "thier" ideas about what should happen here is what I did, as a good American:
I sent them all an equal bill totaling 49% of the purchase price of the property, property taxes, insurance, expense for upgrading roads, etc. A letter attached stated that I would allow them to have a "vote" as to what happens to the property as soon as the partnership was complete and certified funds deposited.
No more Problems!
This was a simple lesson in capitalism.
Some People in this country need to get back to taking responsibility for their actions and not blaming their problems on someone else. I am sorry Tom but I mostly disagree with you about telling them the way it is. If you take people like that to a dance they will expect you to dance with them. Our lives are based on choices and they chose to live next to the airport. I DO agree with reaching out to the community and making them part of the airport "family" through airport functions and events. maybe they want to sell the house cheap? Make a nice 19th hole????......well the airplane equivalent! this post struck a nerve so I thought I would share the experience. I feel better now!

Tom Yes your correct, the point was was to show the mentality of people who don't take responsibility for their own actions. ex. He chose to live beside an airport then complained about the airplanes. BTW- i loved wings to adventure, ever make it to DVD? C

Username Protected wrote: So Sam How can one have a farm without a barn? I thought that was what barns were for--to keep the farm equipment and animals in. Now what did you really say to them??? Seriously Peter; I was really taken aback. And I really offered to plant trees. I didn't say much more except I did think of putting a "No trespassing" sign on their side of the fence to keep them away as I quickly deduced they were nuts. Property ownership is an unbelievable experience especially when your "property" is "bigger" than theirs. Probably the same with seeing you fly an airplane. You automatically are "bigger" or worth more than they are. Its pathetic insecurity at its best and the best you can do is be compassionate and friendly no matter what. (Airport is a different matter; one needs a group support approach as Tom suggests) This isn't the only neighbor; it gets even better: One neighbor who lets me use some pasture for my cows (for the tax right off) insisted my farm hand was stealing dirt (where a bull had dug a hole) Poor guy, probably 80, lives alone, kids cannot tolerate his behavior, and all he has in life is all this "crap" (house, yard, stuff all over the place) he has accumulated; really sad. Another neighbor who I have a deeded access down a lane of property that exists in his name, suggests I might want to share in road maintenance and property taxes. I promptly went and bought my own private access from the guy mentioned above, who gets totally pissed when right after I buy the property the value triples. One little secret I have learned: never ever let someone know how much money, land or wealth you have. period.

Since I live across the street from the river, this apparently grants all the boat people, mechanics and other associated people who rent slips/dock space from my neighbors the "right" to tear up my lawn...at least in their mind. I actually had one guy curse me out when I asked him to maybe park on the guys property where he keeps his boat. So that wasn't you then ?
