Just curious, does it need to be a G58 or could it be an older baron with modern glass? A B55P2 has the space you need, and better performance than a G58 because its so much lighter.

To me a Cirrus vs Baron comes down to how you feel about flying a single. The Cirrus will almost certainly be less expensive and has similar door to door times.

Hi Josef,
I’ve been keeping an eye on the BE55P2. I loved the handling of my F33A which would be largely replicated in the 55. I like the newer flight controls layout which my prior 58TC had. I’m looking for a pretty new airframe. I also like FIKI although I fly conservatively.
Regards,
Bill

I have a P2 and its a blast to fly >2000fpm at sea level and >190 KTAS at 17K. But of course you need to feed to IO550s and its pretty loud. Of course all of them are pretty old.

I haven't had good success with the boots on barons for shedding ice. Mine haven't been FIKI but I think the boot system is the same as on the FIKI barons.

For me the Baron is the answer. Radar and 2 engines win. I made the exact choice and bought a 58. That said, at age 69, depending on your horizon, insurnace may drive you to the 22.

David, I agree, the Baron is the one - age and insurance permitted, of course.

I was recently flying a Citation M2 but that's just too much plane for my purposes
right now. It's an awesome plane - but you need to have the right missions for
a twin jet - it's very 'businesslike' - like any jet, it needs to have missions where
it stretches its legs and goes high and far. I just don't need that right now - maybe
down the road again, but not now.

Since I'm downsizing, I thought of a lot of planes and my roots keep on taking me
back to the Baron. I have about 2,500 hours in the Baron and about 75 in a Cirrus 22.
I just think that the Baron is a much more substantial airplane. The majority of my
trips will probably be less than 300 miles and the Baron is perfect for that. But
the good thing about the Baron is that you can travel 1,000 nm miles in a day too.
I've made many trips of that length before in a day - so it's very versatile. Since I was
flying a 2000 B58 with 166 gallons, we often stopped in Grand Strand or Wilmington
between White Plains and southern Florida. I made it back to White Plains (KHPN)
from Stuart, FL (KSUA) nonstop with a nice tailwind a couple of times. Definitely easier
to do that with 192 gallons of fuel in the newer models - a solid hour more flying with
that extra fuel.

So, I'm seriously thinking about getting back into a G58 - I thought about the Cirrus
22 as well - but not for too long because I just think that the Baron is more of an
airplane. It's the solidity and stability that make the Baron a great plane - also, on
board radar and very effective boots mean a lot to me when traveling in all sorts
of weather.

Here's a good video:

Listen to what Stevo says here - this is what I mean about the Baron being
substantial - he says the flying the G58 makes you feel like you're flying
a "real airplane" - I agree:

Doug,
You and I are thinking along the same lines. I think the Cirrus is an excellent “step-up” airplane and one would probably never leave the Cirrus world as long as they didn’t need something substantially more capable. My last experience, although quite some time ago, was 2000 hours flying Learjets. It’s hard for me to conceive moving back to a light single.
I’m going to do some flight training in a late model SR22 next week. I’ll see if that alters my thinking.
Regards,
Bill
