For those that may not know how the C-5 got the name Fred, it was because it was a money pit, "F--kin' Ridiculous Economic Disaster." For every one flying, there was usually one AOG somewhere.

Got a tour of Scott AFB some years ago and one of those went AGO in one of the Stans. The maint officer or dispatch was dealing with it as our guide brought us through. Turns out this C-5's nose ramp wouldn't lower. Our guide was a C-5 driver asked the maint guy what its tail number was. Maint guy replied and our guide said, " No problem, have them start up again taxi 5 feet forward and then lower the ramp.".

We came back through 40 min later and sure enough it was fixed. He said most of the hydraulic systems were near custom built on each one and they all had very different personalities.
