A T-38 seemed to be a reachable civilian thing.
Here is a Chuck Thornton story.
We hired him to fly chase on 750 dive tests, one of which may have just barely cracked Mach 1.
The Flight Test people were really competing to see who got to fly back seat. Finally, one person with previous T-38 experience flew all the flights.
On one test, when returning to ICT, ATC was giving him all kinds of vectors, which don't work well in a fuel critical airplane like the T-38.
