Scotch brite. Keep on going with it or employ a second shift to bring it on home. If you get through the anodized layer, you'll need to alodine those spots.

OK, here's the strategy. Maroon scotchbrite the entire airplane to get the remaining paint and scum off. Acid etch, alodine (I have no idea if alodine sticks to anodized aluminum but it can't hurt, epoxy primer, Jet Glo white, Acryglo on the stripes. Bondo the dents will be with West Systems/Micro Balloons. I worked in an aircraft paint shop one summer in college painting my experimental. Not rocket science.

Opinions?

Mike

Thats exactly what we tell ya to do on a Sikorsky helicopter, and they see more salt water than your Grumman ever will. S92A's flying oil rig air taxi services.

Scuff the anodize and the epoxy primer (MIL-PRF-85582 or MIL-PRF-23377) will stick right to it.

Some might ask why am I doing this myself? I want to win Oshkosh and Sun N Fun "Best Seaplane" and be able to say I restored it myself. Also, I got a $55K paint quote and believe I can get it just as nice for $5K. Also, it's something to do and I'm enjoying it. The entire interior will also be less than $5K with nice marine vinyl. This is a quirky airplane with a limited market so I'm trying to be cautious dumping too much money into it. However, I really like it and think I'll probably own it for a very long time.

I was wondering why no one mentioned Roloc disks??? The standard at paint shops everywhere for just such an application....

Wet strip. Blast remainder with crushed almond shells. Roloc if necessary. Finger sand around stubborn rivet heads with no more abrasive than 400 grit. Alumiprep. Alodine. Primer. Paint. Use good equipment. You look good! Last l-o-n-g time. ~ Mark

NO NO NO... Never use these things on the alclad aluminium skin of a little airplane, they are far to agressive. You can do a lot of damage in a hurry, castings to steel parts maybe, but only with extreme care.

Finger discs are much better, but still be careful, a lot of corrosion issues later have been caused by improper procedures by well-meaning people doing the prep. The prep is the most important part, and in the end, there is no substitute for old-fashioned elbow grease to get a long lasting quality paint job.
