Does anyone have a line on a good, used, serviceable flap computer for a Navajo? These were used in the "later models" after about 1978.

We found one used one, sent it out for overhaul and it came came unfixable. Apparently there is one component that fails and it is NLA. Anywhere. We talked to all the usual sources to include Mike Jones.

A new one is available at $15k and a 365 day lead time. Any leads on late model junkers that are not already at wreckers would be appreciated. Or, I fly you just happen to have one on the shelf you want to part with. ;)

Did you try Jeff Cooke in Santa Anna. He has the world's largest stock of used Navajo parts (buys them by the fleet load.) phone 714-558-3206.

Chris

We might have one as we just bought a hoard of Navajo parts. Do you have a part number?

The Piper P/N is 551-992 and the MFG P/N is 8482.

Here's what I found. Mostly all as removed.

What always surprises me is that these 40 year old electronic devices can't be repaired. If you decide to throw away your unserviceable core, would you mind if I bought it? I really want to take it apart and see what is inside. It may be some $11 ASIC (chip) that can only be programmed by Piper for $6,000 surrounded by $50 worth of capacitors and resistors, breadboard and wiring.

What also surprises me is that there are two on eBay for :bugeye: $6,600 with only a $100 core :bugeye: charge. Two years ago one sold for a core price of $75. The electronics nerd in me is really interested in what in there is $6,5000 or $15k.

Granted, I haven't seen the guts of them and don't even know if some of the parts are available or if there is a way to test them. I am just curious what is inside and it is worth the core charge + S&H to look.

You read my mind, I was going to ask the same question and had the exact same thought process.

I wonder what's in the box...

If he is willing to sell it to me or even ship it, I will deconstruct it and take pictures. I will likely also look at the ASIC "chips" and EEPROMs. Since this is 70's technology, likely will not be able to find out what is on them since I tossed my college PC with all that gear a well over a decade ago. There may be something older in there as EEPROMs and ASICs didn't come on the scene until the late 70s.

...and I am really curious!

Edit - I think that I found the patent for the system as a whole:

Dodson has 3 on their shelf, in as-removed shape, according to their site.

Thanks to everybody who replied. It seems there are two models of the amplifier. "Old" and "New".

The old cannot be repaired as there is some old NLA component. Hence the "new" one for $16k which supposedly is serviceable.

The conversations we had today indicated buying a new amp/computer still beats a $1.5mm KA200. For now. ;)
