When I was instructing in the 182 one of the most common mistakes I would see is the pilots quit flying the airplane too early in the flare and just plant the airplane on the runway. The 182 lands fine, but a pilot has to keep flying it until it is at walking speed. Use the drag from the flaps to slow the airplane down, not the brakes. A lot of 182 pilots land hot, plant the airplane on the runway, then stomp on the brakes.

Then, in a cross wind, they "add a few more knots for Momma" try the same planting of the airplane on the runway and that starts the wheelbarrow or porpoising.

I really don't like two hands on the yoke, but once the mains are firmly planted and power is off, a pilot can creep that right hand up on the yoke to help keep the nose wheel light. YMMV just some thoughts.

Tom,
Is on the button about landings. I think anyone new to it should get someone who has experience to show them the attitude and method of landing it. Very easy to plunk them in and that is not necessary or good. 182's are nose heavy, use trim. Much easier to land smoothly with someone in the back seat. I've used every flap position for landing but on a regular basis I settled on 20 degrees. A 182 handles a cross wind very well. I've landed direct 90degree 24g34 without bent metal. Had 75 hours then and instructor in right seat.

Never let it land on the nose wheel first or at the same time as mains. Big damage to firewall possible. A bounce off the mains is much better and can be recovered from easily several ways including a GA. Loved my 182...

I've found this pretty typical for most nosewheel only pilots. You need to fly the airplane until you tie it down. :pilot:

Landing a 182.

TRIM, TRIM, TRIM, TRIM, TRIM, TRIM.

Somewhere between 6 and 12 "sweeps" of the big trim wheel between cruise trim and a full flaps landing trim.

Don't forget to retrim when you STOP after leaving the runway and before the taxi to the ramp. ;)

BTDT, not "untrimmed". Same procedures in the 180/185's Tom.

AGREE.

I have been trying various attitudes on landing, and today with lots of trim, found the landings almost a breeze. It's been tough transitioning from the speed and trim in a Baron to the 182, so this thread came along at just the right time for me as well, and has been most instructive!!

Dont forget to retrim if you are doing touch and goes or you wil need a big armful of bicep trim to keep the nose down on takeoff

You'll also need those biceps (or more likely triceps) if you have to go around unexpectedly.

Because someone PM'd me about a 182, and it referenced this thread, thought I'd give a quick update.

Third flight, and since, landings have been easy. Very easy. And where I use to be proud to get off at the first exit at ABI in the SR, now I have to taxi a ways to get there.

It was all site picture. The SR feels like your going in way nose low. The 182 is nose high. It's striking how much RW you can see in the SR while landing.

I've done 7 instrument approaches - lots of clouds around TX lately; especially south and east Texas. I've forgotten how incredibly stable the 182 feels in IMC.

I'm enjoying the 182.
