I ran into a plane broker yesterday that told me that 172 sales are extremely hot right now for foreign markets like Russia and Asia. Seems like those have younger populations that are "discovering" that a used U.S. airplane like a 172 that performs as both a trainer and a first airplane makes sense. He also expect Archer sales to improve as the number of nice used 172s goes down. Only mentioning this since it might be a great time for those pilots that have been wanting to sell or upgrade.

Agree

But your post sounds like a broker/dealer with a number of samples in hand...

Our flight school in Seattle has had to search far and wide for decent C172s. We just got one from South Dakota a couple of weeks ago. The competition, as others have noted, is fierce. Many Skyhawks are going overseas.

Good thing it is one of the few airplanes still being built.

So . . . should we expect this trend to expand to Bonanzas and Barons?

I had a long conversation with my broker, Steve Pittman yesterday. He tells me that A36's have held their value much better than anything else. We had a lengthy conversation about the pitfalls of selling a plane to a Foreign buyer. Seller should be wary. He says we haven't seen the bottom for twins.

I agree with your broker about twin values. It's one of the big reasons I now fly an A36. Possibly/probably the best value proposition in the Beech line.

My flight school uses 172's on lease-back. Right now they are down a couple of planes. Having a hard time finding them, although their lease-back terms do not favor the plane owner at all.

I kill time looking on controller and barnstormers for weird stuff. There are some amazing prices out there for off-brand planes. Or, put another way, other planes have NOT held their values.

I currently have 2 c172s on leaseback to a flight school. A 1997 R model with the 180hp conversion, and a 1982 RG which we added recently.

Both planes are busy and generate positive cash flow.

Whenever I look at controller or T-a-P, there's only a few of these aircraft for sale.

While Cezzna still makes the G172, it's not financially viable for the purpose stated above.

same here in Europe...clean C-172s in high demand, for all the above reasons..

also if Piper would crank up Archer production, they could sell some containerships full of them over here..

seems for all the right reasons, people like a simple but sturdy fixed prop single + naturally all the avionics goodies that are available now..I mean Garmin 1000 cockpits and such...

I am only afraid that a new management at Cessna for instance will focus on the fact that they cant make money for the price they sell them, in my opinion because of prohibitive liability insurance premiums per copy made...they up the price of a new 172 to 450K USD +...and then it will be over...and that will be the end of it...

Bonanzas must be selling well too. I have received three written broker solicitations in the last month. They must be scanning registrations and think I'm ready for an upgrade (owned current plane for 4 years)

When I was selling my 1972 Cessna 172L I got a few different offers from folks overseas. It seemed pretty complicated for me as a private seller but it did suprise me that people overseas were taking interest. This makes sense now.

I get at least a couple of un-asked-for broker solicitations for my A36 every week. Is that just because it is an A36, or do brokers send solicitations to every airplane owner all the time? (Sorry for the thread drift.)
